Ok...how do these tools make us more efficient?

We don't have time to take a full time job managing UGs using software that we may need to pay for out of pocket. What tools work should be used. UGs CANNOT waste time or money trying to find software that just works.

An idea is to get tool companies to sponsor UGs so we get the free software and they get publicity.
The best tools are those that also give us ubiquitous data access. Exporting to XML, JSON, Excel, SQL, etc. It's even better if these applications are cloud/SaaS and we can document any procedures that are necessary.

What could hurt us

  • Lack of ubiquitous data sharing - we can use all sorts of tools and not have them crosstalk
  • Scalability - How do we make sure our technologies can scale as we gain new members and maintainers
  • Development of rolling-your-own solutions - Should it be treated like writing another software application?
  • Time and Effort - is this worth the amount of time I want to spend
  • Data Security
  • Privacy
  • Purpose - For internal use or public consumption
  • Backing up of data
  • Exit Strategy from Cloud/SaaS
  • Storing Logins - I don't want to make another account! ;_;
  • Longevity
