I can use AtlantaUserGroups.com as a case study to talk about how to help unify a city/region of usergroups on the Ning platform. A lot of the way AtlUG has been built is to help with finding speakers, sponsors and spaces as well as dealing with RSVPs, announcements and even some integration with tools like Twitter. The site itself still has a long way to go and only launched at the end of May, but I think other groups could use the model to build similar sites for their regions.

Even down to the core Ning can be used for individual groups as well. Basically it can be used to unite any niche of people. MohawksRock.com is the first site I built with Ning and it unites almost 3000 mohawked people across the world. Now thats a weird niche.

If it wouldn't be a topic all itself, then maybe a platforms for group organization could be an idea too.
